While researching the topic of sharks and how they are shown through media sources it is quiet interesting to see how negatively they are shown. Through the media stories are aired to millions of people on a nightly basis and when a negative story comes across the public will believe what the news anchors are telling them because they are considered a "credible source". When it comes to sharks, news anchors most likely have no knowledge on them besides what the story or stories have told them. Shark attacks are very rare and when a shark attack does happen usually news stations world wide will cover it. When sharks are killed daily by fisherman nobody hears about the millions of them that are killed yearly.
If we look at the numbers it is roughly four to seven shark attacks per year and a million sharks are captured and killed for various reasons. In cultures it is tradition to eat shark fin soup which shows a sign of wealth. When these customs continue to happen through out society today more sharks will be getting killed to continue on with these customs.
Another problem for sharks is how humans set them up to look like the bad guys in shark attacks. The media rarely informs the public who is viewing their channel about the precautions that swimmers are able to make in order to prevent these attacks from happening. If the public were to take these precautions it wouldn't guarantee that shark attacks would never occur again, but it would help limit the amount of sharks attacks for mistaken identity. When a shark attacks a human they mistake the human as their prey because of the common features that humans have with seals and injured marine life.
Sharks have been around longer than any human, in fact sharks have been around for approximately 400 million years. But sharks are getting closer and closer to becoming extinct with how over fished they are because of how negatively they are shown through media. If sharks were to become extinct it would completely destroy the oceans ecosystem because of the food chain and cause they are the one of the top predators in the ocean. If we want to continue the trends that we have with fishing and killing sharks they will be extinct in the future. If we want to make a stand and save the sharks we need to start campaigning to help save them. They are just as important as the polar bears up north but get no publicity.
It starts with one person speaking up and reaching a couple more people and continuing the chain until something is changed. So lets start today and try to save our oldest animal from the ocean, the shark.
